Robert Schmick Portfolio Child uses Ice Harvesting Saw on Fields Pond.
This is one of the many programs that were developed at The Curran Homestead to get vintage tools in the hands of children so that they can, while supervised by adults, learn by doing. Here the task is sawing ice blocks from the surface of a frozen pond. Ice was taken from the pond using authentic harvesting tools and brought the museum’s nearby farmhouse where it a solitary block of ice was put in a kitchen icebox. The interactive involving the steam traction engine cut-outs for the proposed grant will put open end wrenches in the hands of visitor allowing them to tighten and loosed vinatge square head nuts in simulated mechanical repair.
